I was wondering if it is really all that for increasing your concentration and or attention span. If it is I might try it for when I go back to college for my master's and ph.d.

Any thoughts.

oh boy...while never officially diagnosed as ADD, i have used my share of ritalin (methylphenidate) and dexadrine (l-amphetamine)...yes it helps you concentrate in the short run...you will be like a demon...however, i had problems with retention...i would read so fast that it wouldnt always sink in...i would do fine on tests (trust me, i was on fire in school) but have trouble recalling even basic scientific principles now...

the latest stuff is adderall...i would say approach it carefully, dont use it unless you need it, and stay with low doses...it gets kinda addictive if you like the wired feeling..(i don't, way to high strung to begin with)...

on a side note, i noticed that the really hyper kids who got prescribed it, didnt really like taking it due to the way it made them feel...and kids who werent hyper who took it, found themselves addicted to stimulant effect...

Ya, I have been on and off of Ritalin for about 9 yrs. Its O.K., but have you ever been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. There are a lot of good meds out there right now. Adderall, is hands down the best for me. I would guess that the half life of the drug is short though. Because, it puts you in a zone for about 3-4hrs, I dont feel the effects all day, which I like. If you have any other questions jusk ask...

I have been diagnosed with ADHD for about 10 yrs I think, I'm 20 now.

Is that how it works? It acts like a stimulant? I did not know that. See my problem is is that when reading a text or even a novel I start daydreaming or something weird. I mean, I read the words but they don't mean anything. I can barely make it through one paragraph before wanting to do something else. I see that in my older boy as well. I am no dummy, but lack the concentration that it takes to get your Ph.D. My professor in physics (nobel winning team for the heavy particle discovery and neutrino research) says I will make it by brute force. It won't be pretty, but I will.

I can't understand it personally, that I have such a desire for science and discovery possess the basic tools, yet have this inability to learn and process the info in a meaningfule way.

I have never been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD or anything for that matter. I just know that for example one of my friends, in college (same degree) would spend a couple of hours studyin for a test, and ace it, in fact he had a 4.0 in aerospace engineering till his last year cause he got divorced. Any way, I would spend all night studying just to eek out a B. I feel like my brain is similar to scrambled eggs. All the info is there, the smarts are there, but somewhere between it all gets scrambled and can't be diciphered. It really pisses me off, cause I want my PH.D and to teach and do research, but I just don't have the attention span or worse.

yes, that's how they work...they are all stimulants...apparently when you are hyper to begin with (wandering thoughts, short attention span, i got it all too bro) it over-stimulates you into submission...it's weird but if you are a motor mouth like me, and you take any kind of speed, you shut the fuck up...you actually get real quiet, don't want to move a lot, don't want to listen to raucaus music...just kinda chill and read by yourself (or clean your house)...

now when a non-add person (especially chicks) take speed, they go nuts...bouncing off the walls, talking a mile a minute, frenetic activity...its weird...

sounds like you got mild ADD...

Chesty,

The shooters in the Columbine shooting were both on Ritalin. So was the kid n Kentucky who shot classmates at teh prayer service or something, as wel as the 6 year old in Michigan who shot another girl.

Ritalin may not have been the only factor but putting kids on meds so they concentrate in school is the educational system's solution for everything.

As for your situation - not exactly sure. Be wary of medical soultions for problmes we don't undrstand.

Quite right Matt. I am very weary of anything medical that screws with my brain. Especially my kids.

I am quite hyper, I am always bouncing my legs, need aggressive stimulation from music, the heavier the better.

That makes sense Bill, when I get drunk (a depressent) I talk even more than I do sober.

I just need to learn how to unscramble my brain and then I think I would really excell in my post graduate studies.

Matt, you said it, thats the public schools way of fixing fucked up kids... Ritalin, I don't think had anything to do with that. I am going to E-Mail you about your IQ, if you dont mind though...

Chesty, do me a favor and ask around and find someone that does tests for ADD and ADHD. You just described a mild case of ADHD. Are you hyper a little as far as physical? BUT your mind is where the non-stop activity is going on? If so, (which I think you have) is the worst kind of ADD/ADHD there is. Only 8-10% have it in the U.S. Now, I am not doubting that you cant achieve anything you try... But a good ADD/ADHD med will really help you out in trying to reach your goals. In my little group thing I go to, the room is full of Dr.'s, Lawyers, The Middle Walton (Sam Waltons Son, WAL-MART). A lot of people have it and dont want to admit it.

Matthew

I may check into it. I just am leary of being diagnosed with anything dealing with my mind, it could prevent me from getting top secret clearences which I need from time to time in engineering.

Yes, I have my degree in Aerospace Engineering so I know I have the smarts.

I maybe a little hyper, as I described I am always bouncing my legs around at my desk and can't sit still for very long.

As for my mind, it never stops, when I go to bed at night it can take a long time to fall asleep. My ex girlfriend could fall asleep in 5 minutes flat every time. I on the other hand have a mind that does not stop, it is like it does not have an off switch at times. That is probably why I have a hard time studying as well.

Chesty, I'm the same way you are. Bouncing my legs all the time, don't want to sit still for very long, read the words but don't "really" read them. When I read the news paper I will get through a couple paragraphs and then notice another article and start reading that without finishing the first article. It seems like I don't retain facts very well because I can't concentrate on them. My mind is always in hyper drive. It can take me a couple hours to fall a sleep because my mind won't slow down. I will think about anything and everything and won't be able to relax. When I take an eca stack, stimulant, I am able to foccus and seem to think and speak much clearer. I am going to the doctor this week to see if it's ADD. I'm not hyper physicaly, mentally very hyper, so I think it's a lack of ability to concentrate. I just want to get it straightened out because it interferes with life too much.

That is it exactly. I have noticed that when I take an eca dose that I tend to be more concentrated in my efforts. I still get the jitters at first, but then it kicks in. Like when I drive, I suddenly can just stare out the window and drive like there is no tomorrow until it wears off.

Let me know what you find out. Can the family doctor do some simple tests or do you have to see a shrink?

Chesty, I had the same problem when I was in school. I went to the doctor and they diagnosed me with AADD, I have a script for ritalin. It works different for those who have add and those who do not. It definately help you focus on the task at hand, and stops your mind from wandering all over the place. I use it only when I have to get something important done. I should use it all the time however, it works. Without it, I never seem to get anything done.

Well, whatever is wrong with me I hope they can fix it. It is so frustrating to not read past the first two sentences in something or to have your mind constantly going on. It drives me nuts, like there is no off switch.

Chesty and Beezers, I'm telling you that you have ADHD, just in your mind, not so much physically.

As far as the "shaking leg deal"

I am still fucking laughing my ass off! I was shaking my leg when I read that!!!!

Chesty,
When I was on my last masters jag, I was taking Choline Chloride, It opens the blood/brain pathways and increases the flow into the brain. It makes caffeine wish it had a stimulant effect. It was very helpful with my concentration. FYI - Coming off of it even with a tapper is like having someone hold your skull in a vice for about two days while you have a sinus infection that would plug up bolder damn.

I have heard of it being used, but I don't think that is the way to go. Based on the thread so far, unless you have add or such it wouldn't be a good idea.

Hey Wodin, where did you get the stuff?

I took some before lifting. Dexadrine works better for that purpose though. You get the same effect as when taking powerdrive or large doses of l-tyrosine. Personally I think the powerdrive or l-tyrosine + ECA combo is much better. Dexadrine + ECA is a bitch when you come down.

also, Ritalin, among other things, made me paranoid and I would hear things too. Real screwy stuff.

I was getting it in a health food store in De. If you do a search on for Choline Chloride you will find people selling it on the web. Its in a dark bottle, Its a powder makes "Tang" sound like a 100 yr old glass of grandmagnie. Okay it's not that bad, it's got a sort of orange taste to it though.

I just got my adderall bottle re-filled today, personally, I don't think I have ADD, but Adderall has DEFINATLEY improved my grades in school. When I take it, I get really hyper and talkative, but I also get really focused. I can focus on what I'm reading and comprehend all of it--{something that I could never do in the past}

I'm supposed to take it 2 times a day, but because it gets me so wired, I only take it when I need it. And yes, I usually always workout while on Adderall, my workouts are 900% more intense. I usually study for a couple hours, then go workout while on my "high". The drug is a narcotic and can be addictive, thats why I don't take the amount the doc perscribed me to.

I take it the night I study, usually 2 pills 4 hours apart, then I take it 30 mins before the test. I go back into the zone I was in the night before and retain pretty much everything I learned while studying. Adderall is perfect for me because I am such a procrationator, I never study unless its the night before, then I'll pop some adderalls and study. I also notice that the time flies by because I am so focused. I tell people that I studied 6 or 7 hours for the test, and their like WTF?? but I didn't mind when I was on my high.

Some of my friends have tried it and they love it. Basically, you will never know until you try it, but its hard to get a perscription. The psychologist will probably start you off on some weaker shit first.

e-mail me if you have any other questions.

late.
