I think if some people actually knew the definitions of these concepts instead of jumping on whatever bandwagon happens to be the trend this country would be more accurately represented in the elections. So, here are the political definitions of the 4 different ideologies.
Liberal: "Those who favor activist government as an instrument of economic security and equitable redistribution of resources but reject the notion that government should favor a particular set of social values."
Conservative: "Those who emphasize the marketplace as the means of distributing economic benefits but look to government to uphold traditional social values."
Libertarian: "Those who oppose government as an instrument of traditional values and of economic security."
Populist: "Those who favor activist government as a means of promoting both economic security andtraditional values."
Historically, Republicans favor conservatism and Democrats favor liberalism. Jesse Ventura is an example of a Libertarian. I cant think of a populist politician at the moment, but a famous one of the past was William Jennings Bryan in 1896 election.
You can use these definitions to know where you stand ideologically (how you think politically) and therefore you will be better educated in choosing a candidate with this as a reference. Hope this all helps as I know there are some young people on this board.

Good post Superdave.

The difference between involved and committed can best be explained using a bacon and egg breakfast as an example: The chicken is involved but the pig is committed.

If JEsse ventura is not a libertarian I apologise, I was in a hurry. College textbook definitions. They are supposed to be the literal ideologies of the different parties in a simplified form.

We had to take some kind of "test" in my class where we answered questions by stepping to the left or right depending on our answers. If you were on the right at the end you're a conservative and if you were on the left you're a liberal. My teacher admitted it is no where near an accurate test, but it was pretty neat. I found that the kids who dress like "freaks" were liberals who want guns completely banned or know jack shit at all. I don't know much, but I sure as hell know alot more than most of them do. According to the test I am a Conservative.
