I like to watch foreign films with subtitles...it keeps me "in the movie". I find that generally they are more interesing, have more meaning, and give you a look at different cultures. One of my favorites is "RAN".... it's a Japanese film about war between brothers over their fathers' empire. It is fuking awesome....if you haven't seen it I recommend renting and watching it on the biggest screen you can and in DVD if possible.

Anyone have recommendations on other foreign films that you liked? I have many more..... feel free to ask if you want more recommendations from me.

one of the best movies i've ever seen (second only to 2001) is "FAUST". i'ts fucking awesome - it has clay animation, real actors and life-size puppets all rolled into one. it's very wicked.
also, by the same director, is "ALICE", a very dark adaptation of alice in wonderland.
i also loved "Run Lola Run" and "Man bites Dog".

Cinema Paradiso...but only if you are the nostalgic, sentimetal type. It will make you cry at the end.

My favorite is "My life as a dog" They make him stick his dick in a coke bottle and it gets stuck, so they break the bottle and its cuts his weewee. Then there's the part where they wrap up the girls boobs so she can hang out with the guys. Great movie, but I cried when they killed the dog. Poor Old Yeller!

"Farinelli" il Castrato (Franco-Italian): a really interesting movie about a famous Italian castrato.

"Europa, Europa" (German, directed by Anka Holland): a true story of a Jewish boy survivng WWII in an elite SS school for German youth. Incredible.

"All about my mother" (Spanish, directed by Pedro Almodovar) An outstanding flick starring Penelope Cruz (she's so hot!).

Lorenzo, I forgot to mention "Tie me up, tie me down". It's also directed by Pedro Almodovar, and it stars Antonio Banderas (before he started sucking ass, back when he was still a Spanish actor).

Stumpy-- I actually have seen "Tie me up, Tie me dowm" I thought Banderas was hilarious in that film.....it was like I was watching a totally different actor. The chich was nice too.....

Run Lola Run sounds like it has a lot of fans....wonder why I have never heard of it?! I think that will be the first one I watch from these recommendations.

If you guys want to watch come good chinese films with a beautiful and fantastic actess...go out and rent or buy nearly any movie with Gong Li in it...she is the best. "To Live" would be one of hers at the top of my list.

I just remembered I have a copy of "Tie me up, Tie me down" -good stuff. I just picked up a copy of Luc Besson's "La Femme Nikita" in French with english subtitles. I notice that Jean Reno seems to die well in a lot of his roles.

Peter Greenaway's "The cook, the thief, his wife, and her lover".

Gotta rate Bergman pretty high.
