I finished the Texas Aids Ride with no problems (Houston to Dallas). I was able to maintain a 15mph speed with no problems either (except the last hour of day one for some reason).

I consistently finished in the top 15%. Mostly the well financed corporate race teams finished before me.. now to work on that 20mph speed.

Besides the biking it was the most wonderful experience. The most touching thing I saw was a rather out of shape, older, portly guy really struggling through the hills and the route, and I noticed he had a smaller kids bike welded to his own bike. Later I found out that bike represented his 10 year old son that died from Aids two months earlier.

I'm in awe of the pain that older guy went through this week, both physical and emotional with that reminder of his lost son at his side.

I've lost 5 pounds, hopefully not muscle. They don't feed you THAT well there, but I ate something every hour (usually a piece of banana or granola bar), and I was a gatorade fiend as well, which of course is full of sugar.

I talked briefly to the older guy that lost his kid but I lost all control looking into his eyes and I ran to the showers and cried like a bitch in the showers so no one would hear me.

I don't know why that touches me so deeply, I'm trying hard not to tear up in class now!

You don't why that touches you so deeply?...because its a deaply sad case and you went through that fathers therapy and pain over his lost with him as he struggled on the ride.....if that doesn't touch you heart I'd be questioning if you even had one.

Hey JonnyO,

I really appreciate your post. This post about the portly man, brought tears to my eyes. I have a older bro, who has aids for over 15 years. He is holding his own quite well. I hope this event brings more attention to this terrible virus, we could all be in that situation.

Keep up the good work!

I don't know if Texas is going to have another ride, but I'm seriously considering doing the California Aids Ride in June, which is a ride from LA to San Francisco if I remember.

Those who have driven up Highway 1 know that is not an easy route to drive, let alone bike.

You're a good man Johnny O.
I'm glad you made it to Dallas safely, and the weather held out.
The guy with his kid's bike put a lump in my throat too. Man.......
Anyway, we're proud of you.

I'm a newbie to Elite, but I can say that ever since I've been "lurkin'", JohnnyO is the man I admire most on this board...considering the forum (macho BBers), JohhnyO has shown he has the biggest balls of all, simply by openly discussing his lifestyle...this post confirms that.

Now, JohnnyO has the sorest butt of all!
j/k

Congrats to JohnnyO
Peace, out

Thanks... my butt is very sore.. supposedly I'm bruised back there but I haven't looked. I probably need a new bike seat.

The streets in the country were a lot rougher than I expected,

for mightydog... we rode past Lake Bryan.. it's BEAUTIFUL!
