Given the vastness of space and the number of possible inhabitable planets, what do you think the possibility is? Now life form is not limited to basic carbon life forms such as us. It could mean silicon, methane breathers and such. Just give me an idea. Why can't we ever exceed the speed of light? And is there a way to trick nature into allowing us to travel faster than light?     | ||

Yes to both statements IMO. 1. I used to be really into 'conspiracy theories' and belive 99% that they exist and are here already. 2. There are numerous theories about exceeding the speed of light, one being that using gravity, it would be possible to actually bend space. Think of it as 2 points on opposite ends of a piece of paper. Normally, you'd have to travel the length of the paper to get from point A to B. 1. It's a statistical impossibility that life does not exist elsewhere. 2. The speed of light was actually broken in a "laboratory experiment" this year (I think it was in a super collidor). The effect was observed for a very, very brief moment, but it happened. (Sorry I don't have the details for you at this moment.) ------------------ | ||

Here's an article that sums up the experiments that resulted in the speed of light being broken. It's from Howstuffworks.com. Gotta love this stuff! Breaking the Light Speed Limit Researchers at the NEC declined to comment on the experiment while it is under review by Nature, a weekly peer-reviewed science journal. However, Kazuko Anderson, a spokesperson with the NEC in New York, confirmed the accuracy of the New York Times report. In a second superluminal study, published in the May 22 issue of Physical Review Letters, scientists at the Italian National Research Council of Florence shone light beams at a curved mirror. The mirror then shot the beams back at the instrument that measured the rays' speeds. The beam coming from the center of the mirror was measured at 5 percent to 7 percent faster than light speed. The authors said this effect only works over relatively short distances, such as the one meter used by the Italian researchers. Exceeding the speed of light may have future implications for space travel and computer chips, but for now scientists are uncertain about the practical use of this discovery. Neither experiment was able to use a light beam to carry any information or prove that an object of any weight would be able to travel beyond light speed.

Two points: - the speed of light was broken by sending a laser through a chamber of gas of some sort, I want to say cesium, but who knows. The light actually left the chamber before it had finished entering it. Think about that one for a while Chesty. - there is an equation which is used to estimate the number of intelligent civilizations (I forget the name of the equation). In the Milky Way alone (our galaxy) the equation indicates there were likely thousands of intelligent civilizations. It becomes an exercise in immensely huge, almost infinite numbers. Even with a one in a million chance of intelligent life, there are hundreds of billions of stars in hundreds of billions of galaxies. I'm sounding like Carl Sagan. Anyway, do the math and the result equals millions of potential Earths. ------------------ | ||

THere has to be life out there, too many witneses of alien encounters and footage of millions of UFOs. But in general, think about.. WE haven't even explored our own galaxy yet. Our galaxy is grain of sand, in beach miles and miles long. or a Word, in a book, that is in a library miles and miles long. well u get the picture. ------------------ | ||

bending space isnt too far fetched. The WIMPS i described in the other post could be used to bend space, maybe. There are other life forms. Nothing moves faster than light. Where is the info on that speed of light experiment? Ive never heard of that. That would be cool | ||

Yeah I used to listen to Art Bell all the time! I haven't been able to listen to the show nearly as much since he retired, but I guess they still talk about paranormal stuff... by far the best way to stay on top of the UFO current events. | ||

I would like to see a schematic of the apparatus used in conducting this experiment. Simply sending a puls beam of light through a chamber of cesium gas would not produce an excelleration of the photons. In fact, by traveling in air through the glass chamber walls, and through the cesium gas the photons would be traveling slower. I need more info on the experiment. One possible, observable effect of something traveling faster than light is Cerenkov radiation. It is given off when a superluminal particle reacts with a subluminal particle. Yes, it is the Drake equation. We have already found other planets outside the solar system orbiting stars either larger or smaller than our own, if there are planets, then the odds of finding life become better. Traveling faster than light is possible, I can't prove it but I know it is. There was an Australian Physisist working at Los Alamos who authored a paper title warp drive, it showed that it was possible to exceed the speed of light, but a strange type of material was needed. It is called exotic matter or matter with a negative energy (not anti matter). It was long thought that this was just a result of the equation and that it didn't exist, now it is believed it does exist and that it can actually be created, the only problem is the energy requirement to do this and the amount we would be able to produce at present. The jury is still out on this one. | ||

The Drake Equation is worthless. Theory built on hypothesis of estimate. It proves nothing. We can only surmise that life exists elsewhere. But, yes, it is highly likely. Puc ------------------ |
