It is cool.....

Where else can you march in file with 300 of your friends all armed with muskets, revolvers, and cannons blasting each other wearing wool uniforms in 100 degree heat sweating like a pig?

It is a rush when the cannons go off and everyone fires in volleys. I swear you feel you are back in 1861. The smoke and smell of the gunpowder, people falling down and screaming, the total chaos. The best part?

No one dies, we all get up to cuss each other, get back in line and sweat off till the next battle.......

Anybody out there involved in this?

Sounds great. Not quite my cup of tea, though.

You know I have seen this type of s**t on tv and it looks simply ridiculous, kind of gay in way as well. But actually it might not be too bad if you were a part of it, the way you described the guns, muskets and other action going on would probably get your adrenaline going.

Ok havoc, How is civil war re-enactment "kind of gay"? Did Lincoln and Grant have something going on that my history teacher didn't mention? No wonder Mary Todd went insane.

Once you get out on the battlefield, you forget that its 100 degrees and that you are wearing a wool coat, shirt and pants along with your cartridge box, canteen, and musket-all of which weigh about 30 lbs. You sweat like a mf and its true-your adrenaline gets pumping so hard you forget that its 2000 and you have a house, wife, kids. All you think about is firing so hard and fast that all your opponents die before you do and to get the hell out of there alive. I've burned my hand many times on the hot barrel of my musket and never realized it until after the battle was over.

I play both sides, sometimes a rebel, sometimes a union soldier. Being a rebel is more enjoyable however. The battles are prestaged and the the outcome predetermined. Of course the rebels never follow those rules. There are a lot of people in the hobby who take it very seriously.
When there is hand to hand combat, they get a little too rough. Some I think would like to use real ammo instead of blanks.

As far as taking a hit, if you are tired, a newbie, out of ammo, or acting unsafe, you go down.

I love the cannons. When they go off in sequence, you feel the ground shake and the gunpowder smell. Those guys had a lot of balls to face those things at 100 yds and not turn tail and run.

Its not cheap- I've put close to 2 grand in it.

Rent "Gettysburg" it was made 100% with reenactors
