WHEN WHITE PEOPLE ARE AROUND A BLACK PERSON OR A LARGE GROUP,NO MATTER HOW ARTICULATE THEY ARE,THEY BEGIN TALKING WITH EBONICS,OR USING AN EBONIC TONE. I CANT FIGURE THIS OUT FOR THE LIFE OF ME. I WONDER IF BLACK PEOPLE REALIZE THIS? ------------------

STEEL I also agree with what you are stating. I guess the whites feel that they have to speak in this manner to feel accepted. I am white and went to an almost all AfricanAmerican highschool, and I feel I got more respect being myself and not trying to impress anyone with lingo or Ebonics. Wow , what a graet topic. I am a White guy and have been my entire life. I grew up in a 50-50 area. In high school all my friends were Black.(Timeline I graduated HS in 87). We were just a bunch of "preps", we wore the polo shirts etc.I cannot recall a time when I talked in ebonics. I am sure if I did I would have been met a beating for sounding like an ass.That is just not a way that an educated person talks. I know now a days its common and in the course of my day as a Police Officer I hear many White kids talking like Thugs... Some of these kids sound sooooo saaad. Just my 2cents | ||

Yeah, alot of the people at my school use more ebonics since a lot of black people are there. I get most of the way I talk from other white people or parents and family, I don't try to talk a certain way that is stupid. It is just insecurity on their part IMO. | ||

I think that generally, one subconsciously matches their speech patterns to the majority of those around them in any given situation. Somebody that cusses like a sailor suddenly becomes polite at a board meeting, etc... Not a black and white thing -- a people thing. ------------------ |
