As many of you know the state of California is paying out the wazoo for Electric. This is in part due to the under building of power generation capacity for customers in the state, poor growth projections by state utilities and regulators, and the deregulation of energy Prices. One of the wildest examples of the open market is Alcoa Aluminum which has a long term contract of 15 years to buy energy from the Bonniville Flats Power Authority for 22 cents a mwh, they are then turning around and selling this same power back to the same authority for over $55 a mwh. This is driven in part buy power marketers willing to pay what ever price they have to pay to ensure their supply obligations to customers in california.

If they would build there own powerplants in there own state they might not run out of power. I recall a vote several years back that blocked the building of a power plant somewhere close to LA. They wanted to build in in AZ and rent it from them. | ||

Yep, the Feds or the california state government should take over. Especially since it's a losing proposition to make money off of electricity in Cali. And since the Federal/State government is not trying to make a profit profit they should take over even if it's at a financial loss. The economic ripple effect of these power outages isn't going to help the economy any. Imagine how may dot com's and other businesses that have to be online 24x7 are getting screwed! The money they lose will have to be recouped by raising prices. In short, we're all fucked. | ||

The reason california has not built any new power generating station in the last decade is not because of poor projections of consumptiom. The special people in california do not want them built near their homes in their precious state. They want them built in someone else'e state and let them deal with any environmental problems they may cause. Natural monopolies have to be regulated. All anyone has to do is look at cable and phone companies to see what happens when you de-regulate natural monopolies. | ||

Two things have caused this problem and re-regulating things isn't going to help one freakin' bit. The first is the environmental angle. The environmentalists got there way and no new power plants have been built in California in the last ~10 years. During this time, the state's population and economy (mostly power hungry high tech businesses) has been booming. The government has been "listening" to the wrong people. The second is the deregulation was in fact only a partial deregulation. It removed price controls for purchasing power by the energy companies, but it maintained price controls over what they could charge. So when demand soared and supplies dwindled, the energy companies had to pay more and more for power but could not pass the cost onto their customers (who also had no reason to conserve with their costs being kept artificially low). This, of course, brings us right back to the supply side again.... Deregulation good. Half-assed deregulation and supply restriction bad. ------------------ | ||
