I've been on this board for a couple of weeks now and there's been some really good religion content posted. I'm beginning to get the feeling that some of us are searching but are having a hard time believing. Otherwise, why all the threads and questions about religion..in particular, Christianity? Now, I'm not starting this to judge people or flame them. I am seriously interested and want to hear everyone's opinion. So please, be honest and serious in your replies. Thank you.

It has always been one of my favorite topics. I studied a bit at Loyola U in New Orleans, but dropped after discovering it wasn't for me.

Personally, I have been going over and over in my mind "What do I believe?"...I dont know if I would say that I am "searching"...I've been "in church" and I would be perfectly happy to not ever step foot in another one again. I think the debate over religion could go on forever and It is still interesting..so I dont know why all the posts recently, but that is why I have posted on some of these topics..

Actually, not correct Captain. The Muslim faith is the most widely practised.

Religion is an archaic method of "civilizing" the illiterate masses and controlling their actions so they follow a small group of leaders.

Religion is in a decline because 'nations' have taken the place of religion and people are becoming more educated.

jesus got lucky. his disciplines converted the right guy (constantine), who converted the roman empire, which broke up and became europe, which overthrew the world.

incidentally, the roman empire started because of the phalanx. for those who don't know, a phalanx is a military tactic that was unbeatable for a few centuries, it gave rome a leg up in it's rush for empire. so in a very very real way christianity has it's roots in the phalanx just as much as jesus. because without a phalanx, there would be no rome, with no rome, no europe, with no europe, no christianity.
they should put 3 x 5 bronze shields up next to the cross. One wouldn't exist without the other.

i know this sounds like an attack on religion, but it isn't. like i said, jesus just got lucky. his followers converted the right guy. if they didn't, jesus & pals would've just been another footnote in roman history books.

interesting theories and thoughts all around.

im with 2thick on my take of religion. state and religion have been intertwined for a long time. if the people wont listen to a "man" in control, give them a diety to dictate his wishes and the people will follow the man. in a nutshell.

ps...kat...its the "islamic" faith, and its followers are called muslims.

Cleaner,

I looked into this as well. From what I've read the Masons were once a very powerful group. Now it has become pretty much a social club for your communities local business types to gather party and do business.

Atheism or Humanism.

My opinion everything else is a scam. It's hard for me to accept intimidation or extortion as a religous practice.

Example: Either accept Jesus as the one true god or go to hell and burn for eternity. That's just good old fashioned intimidation. How about, "We have free choice" What's their definition of free choice? "My way or the highway?"

Please.

I'll be the first to admit that my idea of God is pretty different. I believe in a God with a long white beard, a gold crown, and a long robe with lots of shiny jewels on it. He sits on a big throne in the clouds, and he's about 500 feet tall. He talks in a real deep voice like "I..AM..GOD!" He can blow up stuff by just looking at it. This is my own, personal idea of God.

Okay, no flame intended but that list is B.S.

Chinese folk,etc. at 4% ???

Are they smoking crack? The Chinese make up 1/3 of the world's population so I would assume that percentage, in fact any Chinese religous sect, to be higher than that.

I believe that there is so much controversy, or rather, differing opinions on religion because all religions, or lack of any religion deals with emotions. When emotions, ones that are espcially so deep within us are questioned, heated debates occur on who is right and who is wrong.
To answer the question of free will. Yes, God does give us that. We can choose to either believe or not believe. He gives us that choice. But just like here on earth, every choice we make has cosequences-good and bad. I believe that if I, as well as others choose not to believe that Jesus as our savior I am making a choice and the consequences are that I am to be separated from God forever in Hell.
This to some seems unfair or unjust. Whether it is or not, I choose to believe the opposite-that Jesus is our savior. Say that I am wrong and that is not the case when I die. It makes no difference, as long as I had not pushed my beliefs on anyone and had done my best not to judge others based on their religion or choices in life. Let's face it, none of our perfect. As a matter of fact, we are far from it.
Also on the statement that Jesus got lucky because of the time He came to earth. I do not believe that for a second. I believe that God sent Jesus down at the time that He knew Jesus would be able to affect the world. He would not have been able to do so at any other time in history. God knew exactly what He was doing.

wfabrizio....that list isnt stating all chinese religions, thats chinese folk. the majority of chinese are included in hinduism, confucianism, etc. chinese folk is a smaller lesser known, hence the lower numbers. i dont think its b.s. however the numbers for islam are probably low since it is the fastest growing religion.

r.e. China
Chinese government is very harsh on the spread of spirituality and religion as well, isn't it? i know christian missionaries have had serious trouble in the past, and they're still kicking the arse of the Falun Gong...

Very good texasamms. I agree wholeheartedly. If it wasnt free will then we would be some type of mechanical device that just responds to someones command. God didnt want that. He wanted people to follow Him because they want to not because He said to. From the beginnig He wanted fellowship with us.But mr. adam took care of that. Now we have to make the choice of whether or not in our free will to follow. Deep inside each one of us is looking for something to fill the void. Some chose to fill it with booze, others with relationships while others look for fulfilment in drugs. Now whether or not we see it as that is another story. Why all the feelings of hopelessness? There are alot of folks that are hurting. You have seen it. The only thing to fill the void is a relationship with Jesus. I am not pushing this on anyone or really wanting to argue with anyone. Everyone is searching for something.
