Okay JohnyO, I have a static ip for the time being and will get a more permanent one later.

How do I go about setting up Windows Professional 2000 (NT5.0) to act as a server? Or do I need a special software for that?

This is where I am getting confused?

If you can a step by step procedure would be quite helpful for the aerospace engineer.

You can email me with the info or post here. I'll check back later tonight.

thanks

You need to install something called personal web server. I'm not home, but i imagine if you go into the control panel, then go to add / remove programs.. then go to windows setup, one of the check boxes will be for personal web server.

I'll confirm that when I get home on my laptop.

start>run
type this:
sysocmgr /i:%windir%\inf\sysoc.inf

When the components window appears highlight Internet Information Services and then click details. Put check marks in the boxes of these components:
Common Files
Documentation
Front Page 2000 Server Extensions
Internet Information Services Snap-in
World Wide Web Server

Click ok then click next.
You may need the CD and also the service pack if you installed it already. If not obtain it and install it. The wording for the "world wide web server" may be different on Pro, I only use server, but it will be the last component. If you need some help, email me. My rates are $185/hour, but for a fellow devil dog I'll help you for free.

If the iis is installed, then you should be able to open up internet explorer, type in your IP address as the URL, and your present default web page should pop up.

Okay, I don't have a present default web page.

All I have is the ip address that I got from singing up with dyndns support. It is a static ip.

I must have to set up the default web page with frontpage next.

You will have to forgive me, I know how to use computers to analyze aircraft structures and aerodynamics and such, I am embarking into dark territory for me.

I can't get IIS to open. I double click on it and it does nothing.

nah, you don't open IIS... your web page is currently under wwwroot directory. Do a search for files and you should find it.

Just go to explorer and type in your ip address and see if a page pops up.

Okay, the ip address on my machine right now is the domain name. |That is all I know right now. When I get home I will try what you suggest.

How does my computer know that the ip that I get from my provider or elsewhere is for my machine?

The iis now opens up with a tutural directory and there is also an icon for web servicing or something that opens up with a big setup screen and walkthrough. I am at work I'll tell you what it is when I get home tonight.

This is very interesting, now I see why you all get paid the big bucks!
