Are my assumptions correct?

With all my new found nutrition knowledge (kudos to everyone here for helping me to "get it"!), I'm trying to help my husband with his diet. He's been an avid lifter for about 25 years. He's 43 yo, 5'11, 240lbs. He had some health problems last year which resorted to him having decreased kidney function and multiple medications. He currently takes high blood pressure medication, amiodarone (for an arrhythmia. He is currently being weaned off if it though), carvidilol (to help his heart function more efficiently), magnesium, phoslo (it helps something with removal of something for kidneys, but I forget specifically now), and an aspirin. Phew!!! :)

His goal is to put on weight, obviously in muscle not fat. Lol. He wants to be "bigger".

Oh-- and did I mention that he needs total shoulder joint replacement?!?! He is a walking miracle for all of his challenges!

One other thing-- dr suspects he might have sarcoidosis, but we are going to a specialist to find out for sure. The kind he has --if he does have it-- does not seem to be a big deal, but the dr wanted to try a round of therapy to see if it would work. So he put my husband on a reallllyyyy high dose of prednisone. He did that for about 4 weeks. Can you say catabolic??? It really messed him up. Lots of fat gain and muscle loss. Since being off the pred (which didnt do any good, btw), he's lost some of the fat, but the muscle and strength isn't coming back as quickly as he'd like.

What are your suggestions for weight gain? I think he consumes too much sugar and that this--perhaps-- spikes his insulin levels and causes him to burn too many calories too quickly (he has a pretty fast metabolism. He can lose weight rather easily). Is this assumption correct or am I off base?

I took a look at his macros. Today, for example, they are 34p/43c/23f. And his sugar for today (not including the two or three chocolate chip cookies that he'll end up eating) is 76g! I'd say perhaps he's not getting enough protein and perhaps the wrong kind of carbs.

Here's a list of typical foods in his diet:
Eggs
Oatmeal
Skim milk
Cytosport monster mass
Turkey breast
American cheese
Bread (one type is white flour, the other he eats is made with whole grains)
Chobani yogurt (major source of sugar here)
American bodybuilding carb force
Protein bar
Peanut butter
Gaspari myofusion
And whatever I cook for dinner, which is usually some kind of lean protein and a carb.

My guesses are these:

1. Too much sugar
2. Not enough protein
3. Needs better carb sources
4. Lay off the cookies

I suggested he replace the yogurt with either cottage cheese or the plain yogurt and add his own fruit. What other suggestions might I add?

Sorry for the long post. I just know you're all so smart and I trust you all and know you can help!!

Thank you!

Looks like you have it nailed down pretty good Fchamp.

Yesss!!! I feel so smart!!! Lol! Thanks, zed! :)

He's gonna start small with my recommendations and just take out the yogurt and replace it with cottage cheese. See how that goes for a week or so then change up something else.

I have a few thoughts too but have to run to a soccer game this morning (silly early games on a Sunday morning!!) so I'll hit ya up sometime today...for here and your log! :)
