training programs vs. just winging it?

I am a younger guy but have gotten frustrated with training routines like splits and 5X5 etc. I seem to spend too much time mapping out workouts and less time actually working out. What I do now is just look at my body and learn what needs to be hit that day and I cater to the needs and wing it that day. is this approach a long term strategy?
