Tell me about periodization

It means not working at your max all the time, deliberately. i.e. if you bench 275 for 8. Instead of next time doing 285 for 8. You could say do 255 for 8, 265 for 8, 275 for 8, then 285 for 8. Say if you bench 1/week, then you would only try a new max 1/month, and the rest of the month would be deliberately sub-max effort. Many studies (with caveats if you are interested . . . ) show some benefit. I personally hate it. I want to hit new maxes. If I don't feel like maxing, I just plateau a week or two. I hate feeling like maxing, but being told to bench far under my abilities for some arbitrary pseudo-scientific b.s. (often these systems, like HST, hinge on muscle physiology studies in rats, who have different muscle fiber ratios, and are rarely competing bodybuilders). Also some of the studies on olympic lifters and the russian work were built around anabolic cycles and blood doping. Clearly if you are off-cycle and just had 2L of blood sucked out of you, sub-max work is wise. 4 weeks later, on 1g test/wk and 2L of blood up, sure you want to max. . . I would say http://elitefts.com/ is the best source for practical, repeated successful periodization ideas. And please start here: http://www.testosterone.net/html/133per.html -- entitled "the New Testament, conjugated periodization". This is ground zero . . . ! Welcome to the new world order ;)

Awesome. Thanks and karma.

Are you still doing WSB? I want to give it a shot by I don't have boards or chains or bands in my gym. Lots of tvs, but none of the good stuff.

I am doing another routine, a homemade hybrid. But Westside is one of my building blocks. It changed my life, and the change stuck . . .
