Squatting with back pain

I have developed a sciatica problem. I'm 44 years old and I have been weight training for over 20 years. my lower back and middle back bother me though especially when I do squats. Someone told me I should avoid them and completely. Is there a way to squat with this issue or should I just give up completely
 
Why do you squat with back pain? stop doing it completely hommie
better switch to leg press etc squatting forget it

Go get it treated.
 
I’d switch out. Don’t get me wrong it’s a great exercise but you can build with others.
