I am wondering which is better for promoting strength gains...
1) Less exercises per body part but more sets of each
2) More different exercises per bodypart but less sets of each exercise
I'm interested to hear people's opinions

I don't think it matters if you give sufficient intensity. I've pondered this before.

like why not do 7 sets of chins and 8 sets of cable rows rather than 4-6 exercises for back (as I do)

I would rather use more exercises and less sets, if you go to failure (or beyond) those specific sets of muscle fibers have been stimulated, so it's time to hit it from a different angle.

IMO stick to basic exercises but do incorporate a variety of movements, just make sure the are efficient exercises (omit 1 arm cable rows and junk like that)

I agree I don't think it makes that big of a difference. I like to change it up just so I don't get too bored. Also like he said hitting it a different way might help sure as hell doesn't hurt. So long as its an equally major movement.
