maxing out while dieting

I remember reading somewhere that said it's not ideal to do anything less than a 3rep max while dieting for whatever reason. Is there any truth to this?

I would think that maxing out (more so singles above 90%) while dieting would be the quickest way to gain strength while on a diet. maybe you overtrain more easily than if you had excess calories, but just take more back off periods? Any thoughts?
 
That's the first time I've ever heard anything about myogenic and neurogenic tone. Thanks for the reply. I guess I should've figured that there shouldn't be much of a difference between a 3rm and a 1rm except more strain on the tendons/ligaments in the 1rm like usual.
