What I don't understand is why Terrel didn't do that earlier. He seemed to just be playing with him (or not really doing anything) for most of the match. But then again, I don't practice BJJ, so I may have missed a lot of what was going on.

It's hard to say. Maybe Terell had to work Almeida toward the edge of the ring so Almeida's tendency would be to shift his weight to stay in the ring. I'll watch the video again.
OK. Almeida had head control on Terrell. Once Almeida let go of Terrell's head, Terrell went for the lock.
