Lifting for strength

I don’t want to look particularly like a body builder but I want to get as strong as possible. What kind of reps should I be doing to gain strength?
 
I stick with low reps high weight (although not more than 90% of my 1rm), for a large number of sets.
 
4-6 and build consistency at a lower weight then increase with deloads

you can push yourself on days doing 3-4 but i would not max out unless it is actual competition day.

4-8 is what I usually do. I definitely wouldn’t max out too often as Steve said
