That's actually a good question, and the answer is it varies. I feel you can start pretty early with light weight training (assuming they have the desire and focus to do so). I do personally think it is better to hold off on heavy training until at least the early teens though, just because of rapid joint development going on at younger ages.

i think it is great to get them into it but you must teach them proper form and that lifting heavy and wrecklessly is incorrect.
