Did something stupid - almost tore my pec

Came back from a 3 wek lay off because of unbearable bicep tendonitus.

Felt strong, figured I'd try to pull 575 on the dead ( easy guys, I know some of you curl that weight) . Got it half way up and my right pec said to me "Mike drop that sh*t or take me to the hospital" so I dropped it. My right upper pec almost under my arm pit was just pulled, it felt hot and tingly, I figured I did some damage so I left went home and iced that sucker, also swallowed more Ibuprofen (by more I mean more than usual). I think I am OK, it hurts a bit when I extend my arms as if I were benching, at the point of lockout .

Moral of the story is don't be a d*ck and pull heavy singles after a layoff.

I was originally going to post and ask the opinion on what you guys thought as far as a pec tear, but I assume a pec tear is hella-worse than what I feel.

Freak 19 did the same thing to his about 2 weeks ago in a comp. Nothing serious as long as its not turning black and blue or bruising. Just keep icing it and back off for a while even though you just came back. IB is always good. Good luck with it.

I take it back, I did not do anything to it, I was just surfing growordie.com and caught a flash of Tommy's torn pec picture, and I didnt do that, so anything less than that is not worth bee-yatchin about.

I actually did a light bench workout yesterday just to pump blood to the area and I feel great.

Thanks GRIMM-dog I did in fact follow the usual, Ice and Ibuprofin , why they go together like peanut butter and jelly, ham and burger, french and fries ...well you get my point.

I just found it so wierd that my pec of all things is what got hurt on a deadlift. Makes you really appreciate the fact that the Deadlift gets the whole damn body involved and we should never take it for granted, shoot, anything can probably get pulled from a heavy dead.

Peace,
Mike

Dude, who cares about a minor protein synthesis inhibition when a torn pec is being treated? I am going through a pec tear rehab situation right now (my second one, thought the first was minor in comparison) and the benefits of using Ibuprofen or another NSAID outwieghs the negatives, by far, IMO. Getting adequate nutrition, rehab, and "supplementation" will make the NSAID/protein synthesis thing a non-issue, as far as I am concerned. I think the "protein synthesis" thing with NSAIDS is blown out of proportion, anyway, but that is open to debate.

Peace.

Well put !!!

At this point I could really care less. Without Ibuprofin I probably could nto train. I am sure the list goes on and on regarding Powerlifters and even Bodybuilders (where protein synthesis is a way of life) that live on Ibuprofin.

Besides when you start breaking everything down its almost as if everything is bad for you.

Peace,

Naturally "Except Ibuprofin" Mike

First of all I was not critcizing sporadic use to treat injury. I noticed that mike said "also swallowed more Ibuprofen (by more I mean more than usual)" which seems to indicae he uses it a lot.

In the same threads I learned about NSAIDs inhibitory effects, I also learned that several studies have shown that NSAIDs are not effective for muscle soreness.

So while I would like to withold judgement, I see only 2 possibilities:

1) That you are taking IB regularly for muscle soreness in which case a) it's not doing anything for the pain and b) it is inhibiting protein synthesis (to what degree no one knows)

2) You are taking IB regularly for some kind of underlying injury which is also dumb because you should either choose exercises that do not aggravate the injury or you should take time off to heal, maybe looking at Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM as an alternative to NSAIDs. Honestly, if you could not train without large amounts of IB maybe you should not train at all.

Not trying to flame, just trying to educate and help.

True joncrane,

Now that I look back, it did appear like a gang up on you.

I NEVER take an anti inflammatory for pain, body aches or otherwise.

I use Ibuprofin because I have severe tendonitus. I've had the MRI's, been to the specialists and they all write me a script for VIOXX.

In my case there is no surgery and no amount of rest that will do. I needed to change some exercises and the supination of my wrist and hand positions to remove some stress from the bicep tendon. However I still experience some pain, I use Ibuprofin before training (ON TRAINING DAY ONLY) and then ice down afterwards. What I consider more than usual is 4 to 6 Ibuprofin and thats only 3 training days a week. My health and blood tests and the lining of my stomach are fine.

I went to one of the best specialists in New York and he told me I could take VIOXX every day for the rest of my life.

In my opinion an over the counter is weaker and probably better than a prescription drug. But I never use anything for muscular soreness.

I am extending an apology for appearing to gang up here.

No offense taken. Glad to know more about your condition and that you are doing the right things for it.
