During the deloading phase what is the difference between :

High intensity (5RM) with low volume (50-60% of the regular volume)

- and -

Same volume with lower weight ?

[I guess it has something to do with preserving the CNS...?]

There are a lot of different ways to go about deloading. If you do the math and calculate total pounds lifted (let's say just on the squating for the 5x5 program), compare the numbers using high intensity/low volume with low intenisty/high volume. The volume/frequency plays a big part in the outcome of the final number. There are also a lot of benefits to training with higher intensities (% 1RM) so one is able to allow for recovery yet still apply fairly stimulative workouts over a period that will lay another foundation for the coming weeks.
