are deadlifts working your back more?

I was having a discussion today with my buddy at the gym while we were doing deadlifts and he says that deadlifts should be considered more of a pulling exercise cause it involves the pulling muscles of your back, but i argued that they are a leg workout cause you are doing your leg muscles. who is more right?
 
if done properly it hits back, legs, neck/shoulders, even calves and abs especially if you squeeze and lift off. pretty much a total body lift.

just do me a favor and do it PROPERLY. i get sick of seeing morons throw 3 or 4 plates on and do them with no form. do them PROPERLY #1.
