deadlifting with dumbbells

I watched some videos of Jay cutler deadlifting and he uses 150 pound dumbbells to do them which is interesting. I never tried doing it like that I use a bar. The problem is at my gym the bars are super thick so it changes the grip a little bit. Besides asking them for better bars (people have been asking for years and they don’t upgrade) would I be able to use dumbbells to improve my lifts?
 
Try holding the dumbbells' between your legs and pulling up on the deadlift or go back to bar.
 
Yes they are fine to do and can take the stress off of your lower back to put more focus on your quads by changing your center of gravity. Ive done them in my gym. We have dbs up to 170s

You can also use a trap bar and accomplish the same thing
