The best core workout for bad back!

with all the great minds on this site I'd figure I'd give it a shot in the dark and ask this question to the more "trained" persons of the site! 15 years ago I was in a bad car accident and was for the most part not expected to live. Well I did and now I'm getting tired of all the pain meds I'm still on for what ails me. My pain Management Doctor told me to do more "CORE" training to get my painful lower back into better shape. for the last 15 they have just been shooting my spine up with kenalog and Morphine . Well that led to me developing type one diabetes. So now I got to try something better then Drugs. I have full ROM . My Spinal doc told me I have advanced arthritis of my lumbar spine. Getting a MRI this week to see what the surgeon can do to help me out but for now working out is the best deal I have right now. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey bro.

Congratulations on all of your steps you've made to recovery. My hats off to you. In all honesty,In my opinion, I would'nt feel very comfortable giving you any type of exercises without some range of motion tests, and a dr referral. I have many clients w/bad backs, its not that i do not know, I would just hate to give you exercises to try and you hurt yourself. You are probably rolling your eyes right now but Im only looking out for you man. Im sure you are more capable doing exercises but if you insist on trying some make sure your back is totally supported on the floor or bench w/ whatever you do.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you it just seems when it rains it pours! I have seen a spinal specialist and he informed me putting in rods would be best but that cage wouldn't give me the flexibility to just be a normal weightlifter then he gave me all the downside and it just depressed the hell out of me. So my PT guy's had me doing the basic rehab stuff but then I told him my goals and ideas told me i was being somewhat unreal so now i have scaled back my dreams but haven't given up on the idea of lifting and getting my 6 pack for summer. But right now all I am doing is the whole straps ab workout and weighted crunches it's not bad sometimes I get that ouch factor and have to back off. just a few weeks ago it got so bad I had to go in and get those injections in my spine cause i was doing shrugs and something shifted and now i have beeen out of the gym for a few weeks and it's not to bad just hate sitting around getting porky .

You could try Pilates. Unsure where you live, but you could look up a QUALIFIED pilates instructor here:

Romana's Pilates - Official Home of Romana Kryzanowska, Sari Mejia Santo & True Pilates

This link will show you were certified Romana's Pilates instructors are located. With some luck, one is near you.

I train people with back injuries, hip replacements, knee replacements, Parkinsons, professional tennis players, golf players, baseball players, olympic athletes and a certain Ultimate Fighting champion....

Pilates is the ultimate core program and might certainly help strengthen your back...

Another thing you could look up and consider is Yamuna Body Rolling. This is a very deep system of Massage which could help you as well. Good luck.
