What are some of the best functional movements I should focus on the gym if I want to improve my athletic performance? I want to get faster and stronger.
 
Heavy barbel exercises, foot work (jumps, drills, sprints, all kinds of explosive body weight movements), sled pushes/drags. I'm sure you can find many other useful exercises by doing a little bit of googling.
 
Kettle bell swings and walking luges are great for building strength and athleticism

Honestly unless you've a specific weakness or imbalance all I'd have you do is add resistance to sprints etc (like the tire drag).
