good article, especially for noobies.

IMO if you know what you're doing and are really able to focus on the muscle and be safe, machines have their place, but alot of machine users are noobies who have no fucking clue, and think they are being safer by avoiding freeweights, but really set themselves up for more injury.

im in bio-engineering right now, and a dreamcumtrue would be in designing/testing/analysing sporting equipment

Other than lat pulldown, I don't use machines because they just don't feel right.
Now I know why.

I use the lat pulldown sometimes, when I feel like doing higher reps for multiple sets. other than that, im happy with just a squat rack and a barbell :)
 
If you look again the lat pull is talking mostly about behind the neck pulls. Keep in front and use good form and you should be fine.
