A San Diego police officer shot and killed a man during a struggle on a bike path near West Mission Bay Drive yesterday, authorities said.
The officer said he used Mace and tried to restrain the man before he shot him as the two fought under a bridge adjacent to the San Diego River in Mission Bay Park, according to authorities.
"When the man grabbed a large rock, the officer drew his weapon and fired at least two shots," said Capt. Ronald G. Newman.
The officer suffered cuts and bruises to a hand and leg during the fight that Newman estimated lasted two or three minutes. The officer's uniform was torn during the struggle, Newman said.
The officer was treated at a hospital for his injuries. He was not immediately identified.
The victim also was not immediately identified. He was described as white, about 35 years old, with stocky build.
The officer was sent to the bike path after a dispatcher got a 911 call from a woman shortly before 1 p.m. reporting a man was masturbating under the bridge, Newman said. The woman told the dispatcher that the man was threatening her and that she was worried others on the bike path would encounter him.
An officer arrived within 10 minutes and found a fully clothed man masturbating on the bike path, Newman said.
"The man got up and started fighting with the officer," said Newman. "The officer used Mace and tried to apply a carotid restraint."
When the man grabbed a large rock, the officer pulled his gun.
"Within just a few minutes of our first officer's arrival, we got reports of shots being fired," Newman said. "It happened very quickly."
The District Attorney's Office and police homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
The shooting marked the second time this year police have killed someone. Last year, San Diego police killed eight people.
