What jobs do pro athletes have after they retire

I heard that Tony Gwyn and Cal Ripken Jr. are retiring from baseball. They are only around age 40. What jobs do pro athletes have when there carreers are over. In the NFL the avarage carreer is 6 years. What do they do after. I heard of some baseball player who had a carreer ending injury and had a job selling house applianaces.

Isn't the whole point of retirement to not have a job anymore?

The smart ones who were smart witht the money they made(not all pro athletes make millions a year) usually outright retire. Lots of others start businesses or jobs which they can use thier name in the promotion ie trade shows, appearances, restaurants, nightclubs etc.

The ones who were stupid with their money can be summed up in one sentence "Would you like fries with that order?"

If they were smart they probably will never have to worry about money again. Pete Rose does autograph signings as do a lot of retired players. A lot of them start a business. I saw where The Refrigerator from the Bears is now a mason and Icky Woods from the Bengals sells meat.
