I was thinking of new things i will implement in my competition mode. YOu dont need to read all i warn you its long.I will first start in the gym.
#1 Make sure your equipment is working properly. IF its not outgrowing it make sure their are no tears. Feel safe in your gear.
#2 Make sure the person lifting you off or handling you at the meet has gym time with you. You know when you have the right person. Everyting feels smooth and clean.
#3 This my sound stupid but i do it and it works. If there is someone in your group or gym who comes over and watches you lift or he does lift with you, some people are great motivators. Grab em up. Take them with you to the meet. I have a guy in my gym who trains with me sometimes he has never competed but i DO lift more when he is there period. He is at meets with me. He has since learned to lift me off. So now he has two jobs.
#4 Meet time. Pack your lifting gear the night before. Take your team with you if its a big one. Besides motivation, they help out alot. If your at a certain level of lifting then you too will realize its hard to get there all by your self. Now i am just talking about training partners you know the crew! When i speak of my trainig or a meet i say we alot of times not I. YOu know like a race team one driver but you need a crew. A good team will help you with your shirt , suit or wraps . Also keep up with numbers going on for stategy. One of my memebers this weekend in fact helped me when my righ tleg cramped up during warmup. He pushed out the lactic acid and didnt feel gay touching my leg! It had to be done.
#5 if you lift big in th egym and feel warmed up better in your surrounding do it at the meet too. Dont hit singles up to your max. You got flush blood in your muscles. And if you dont do it in the gym dont expect to do it at a meet and be successfull. I feel you need reps to warmup. Not singles after 225lbs. This wekend i hit 405 for 6 455 3. So i just cut my workout reps in half. Normally i will hit 500 raw but instead oppeted to shirt for 500 and did 545 warmup. Get ready. You cant just turn on a dragster and haul ass in it. It has to be warm.
#6 Finish you rlast attempt warm up about 10 minutes before you lift. Open light enough to lift it , but heavy enough to wear you will still do ok if you get nothing else. Now i know others will dis agree, but i feel opening 50 lbs under you rmax is a waste of energy and if you need to do it before you can hit a max do it in th ewarmup. I always open 20lbs under my true shirt max. Then fininsh 10 to 15 over on 3 rd attempt. Of course if your changing shirt s between attempts that is another story. BUt again use the 20lb rule and you cant go wrong.
#7 Dont let people try to psych you out. Ya know your meet friend (theguy you only talk to at meets) says hey buddy what ya opening with , you tell him, and he goes dam are you sure you wanna do that? I know some like that, they think if the put only 10lbs on there lift since the last meet there is NO WAY you could have put 30lbs on yours. Proudly say yes i am opening with it and actually thought about going a bit more but need to get at least one passed!
#8 Be realistic in your numbers. Your team will help on that one. If you get 2 lifts in, alot of people (including me ) go for it on number 3. BUt if you lift 500lbs on your 2nd and it was tough but you got it... dont go 535 for a new state record on number 3. Hell do it on a 4th!
#9 Have fun while your there. I myself have a blast there, its the evryday training that consumes you rlife, and time. Not the meet. That is why we train hard. My self including am looking at this sport with a little more humor and fun. Its not life or death. Its a F---in hobby!
#10 I will stop here my post is getting tooo long. I type around 75 85 word a minute these days! Next thing you know i hav ea book for a post. Anyway #10 relieve your self of negative things. Now i have gone a bit extreme in this in the last year by leaving work and changing careers completly. If someone is negative and they make you lift less or feel down about your lifts or question anything that gives you motivation. Get rid of em. These negative assholes are in your gym, meets, work, even on the interenet. We lift for fun. Even if you dont compete or hell dont powerlift. You lift for you and cause it brings you happiness. It is a way of life but if you love it and its what you truly have to do to be happy , then its actually a good way of life. I like eating all the time, training 4 days a week. Reading powermag, getting a new bench shirt. Its fun if i didnt do it i dont know what i would do to fill the void or keep my competeitve erges under control. My whole life has been something competetive. I have pins in my right ankle and had em in my left too from a Motocross career i was going have as a teen. You talk about way of life. When i was a kid there wasnt the topic watch y agonna do when you get out of school, we all new it was motocross. Well that ended and i needed to fill a void. So i wrestled in school and took it to the next level and joined the lakeland boxing club. 3 hrs a night 3 days a week sometimes 4. Well 13 amatuer fight later i again was wanting more. The whoile time i was lifting just not seriously. Maybe 1 -2 times aweek. A few yrs later it was i gonna be submission wrestiling. In fact most of my team still do the grappling. Thats whay at meet syou see them with NHB shirts on. They are bad MFers! BUt i found powerlifting while i was grappling and it made my joints sore as hell and i had a hard time lifting heavy. SO .. its powerlifting only. And i think i made the right choice.
