That study doesnt take stance into consideration. When you keep your shins vertical, you're hips are forced to move further behind your feet.
So in order to balance, you obviously have to lean further forward which will put more stress on the lower back. Widening your stance will move your hips in closer towards your center of gravity allowing you to keep your shins straight without having to lean so far forward :)
