Ketosis, unintentionally

I have been consuming about 2200 cals a day, 20% fat - 30% carbs - 50 % protein, trying to cut. It's been working great, I have dropped about 10 pounds in 2 1/2 weeks, starting to get some nice definition.

The weird thing is, I have been consuming about 100 grams of carbs daily, (blueberries, oatmeal, whole wheat bread, broccoli, spinach) and I am in ketosis. I thought carbs had to be below 40 -50 gms to achieve ketosis, at the most 60 -70. But the ketostix say major ketones. I drink a gallon of water at least daily, plus some green tea.

I guess I am not worried about it, but is it a bad sign to be in ketosis at such a high carb level? My workouts are great, and I have plenty of energy all day. What gives?

the sticks are not so important and you can certainly cut on 100carbs a day as long as they are GOOD carbs--I'm doing it now and have lost alot of fat this way

Ketostix

I used some Ketostix, which measure ketones in your urine. I had some leftover from a couple of months ago when I was trying to get into ketosis. This time I just checked as a goof and sure enough I turned them dark red.

It just seems odd. Here are some carbs I just had today: a cup of blueberries, some oatmeal, a slice of wheat bread, at least 2 cups of spinach, and a cup of broccoli. Granted, exept for the blueberries, these are some pretty low GI carbs, but I figured I was eating too many total carbs to be in ketosis.

Hey, as long as I am dropping weight I am happy. It just kind of surprised me that I was in ketosis.

as I said, the sticks mean next to nothing-

Well....

DDC, don't the stick detect ketones in the urine? I understand that you shouldn't rely on them to tell if you are in various stages of ketosis, for example turning the sticks deep red as opposed to just slightly dark. But wouldn't you agree that any change in the sticks means that ketones are present? And ketones are usually only present during ketosis?

Or am I wrong? (I was wrong once, back in 1975)

Well, yeah, my understanding is that Ketostix are accurate to the point of telling you "yes" or "no" in reference to being in ketosis. You could be in ketosis with what you listed minus the blueberries (at least for me, that much sugar would knock me out). What puzzles me is that it usually takes a little less than that to induce ketosis in the first place. But, then again, everyone is different.
