Is it normal not to lose weight if a person diets AND lifts weights at the same time?

Leander

I'm so frustrated, for the past 2 and half weeks I have drastically changed my diet for the better and I went from doing very little to no exercise to working out like an animal.

I cut out all sweets, breads, starches and other foods with high carb content. I now eat lots more vegetables and proteins. I was already in the habit of drinking plenty of water.

So it seems with all the changes that I've made that I should have been able to really lose some pounds, unfortunately it has'nt worked out that way. I'm still stuck at basically the same weight I was at almost 3 weeks ago.

Anyone have some suggestions on what I should do?

I'm so depressed right now I just feel like crawling into a dark corner

My stats

Age - 29
Height - 6'1
Weight - 266
Target Weight - 200-215

I need some encouragement

I can sympathize with you Leander, but stay with it. I didn't see any real progress until the 3rd week. Anytime you drastically change your diet, it takes time for you body to adjust. My diet consists of about 100 carbs/day, 50 carbs coming from a post-workout shake in the A.M....100 fat grams/day, the good kind...and about 300-350 grams of protein/day. I only weigh about 195lbs, so you may need to intake more protein than I do. I also drink 1-1.5 gallons of water. I try to do cardio for at least 30-45 min 4-5 times per week. At first the results were slow, but this is my 4th week and I am down about 8-10 pounds, but my strength has actually increased in some areas. My advice for you is to stick with your diet, and don't cheat yourself. Keep your cardio up and you will see the results!! Good luck!

First thing you need to do is post your diet and we can better assist you. Without not knowing what you eat, we can't give any advice to help you out..

Bro you mentioned that you were previously doing very little exerise, and now are working your ass off.

I think the reason might be your not losing any "weight" is because your making muscle gains. As a "beginer", or someone who has just got back into the weight room, you are going to make substantial process....

So don't go my the scale for now. Judge yourself in the mirror.

A typical diet for me lately has been similar to this:

eggs(w/cheese, green pepper, onions) and bacon for breakfast, salad and meat (hamburger patty w/cheese) for lunch, greens and meat (fried chicken, catfish, seafood) for dinner. Usually drink more than 100 ounces of water on any given day.

Gymrat - Are muscle gains really that drastic when a person first starts exercising?

I would watch the fried foods for dinner. Go with the grilled. Carbs in the PM spell FAT. I would also try to drink more than 100oz of H2O. I try to stick with closer to 150 oz.

I second that that may be whats happening.

if you just started lifting weights it possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time.

thus virutally eliminating any change in weight but still losing fat.

Keep at it eventually you won't be able to do that and you will see the weight drop (along with continueing the real goal thats already in progress, fat loss)
