Having money and living at home vs. Being broke and having your own place

ConstantChange said:
Would you rather live in a dirty ass house with your odd parents and have alot of spending money and free food or move out and barely get by each month and have to eat cheap food, but be closer to your friends and the college campus?

Move out. Then tell your parents to clean the house up.

Move out.

Several reasons.

(1) It'll be good for your self-respect.
(2) It'll be excellent experience (teaching you about living apart, teaching you the value of work, etc).
(3) You'll have more freedom.

After college, I couldn't find a job in my profession immediately (this was in the recession in the early '90s). My parents said I could move in with them until I found work, but I decided I'd rather work at a Wendy's than live with them. Great experience. I've got $ now, but living for a year on minimum wage really taught me about life.

When I first started university I moved in with a friend of mine and we had a blast. Neither of us had any money, but her parents would always buy us food and alchohol. lol My mom occasionally tossed in some cash for bills....so we we're pretty much set. Both of us had to work almost full time to be able to afford it, but it was totally worth it.

Since then I've had to move home ONCE, and I could only handle it for about 5 months. :)

One thing you'll find bro, if you're young, you'll be moving a lot in the next few years. Personally, I've moved 5 times in the last 5 years, and I'll be moving again in anohter month. Better get used to it now.
:)

So yeah, move out, be broke, have fun -- enjoy your youth.

Really appreciate all the responses, a lot of good advice.

Another question I have is this: How much did you guys/girls spend a month on food when money was tight? Can you get by on $200 a month? Is that to high/low?

You can get by, but you've gotta spend wisely. You won't be eating out a lot or drinking on that amount, but you can easily get by with enough to eat.

it is funny how being broke motivates, as someone sauid above.

Yeah you can easily get by on $200 a month. Lots of fruit + veggies and tuna and pasta...you're gold.

Ain't that the truth. Seriously I have never felt more alive than when I was making jack shit and having to budget for my pleasures.

Man I just had to make the same decision. As long as you're parents aren't controlling I'd stay at home. I mean a couple months ago I couldn't afford shit, I was barely making it. Now I've got money to drop on expensive clothes and buy dvds I want and shit like that. Plus im irresponsible, for me its easier to keep going to classes with my mom on my case all the time.

Agreed... Its all about your parents. I can tolerate a little nagging now and again in order to save $200 a month

I moved home last year to pay off a crazy credit card debt. Two months to go and I'm debt free and back on my own. It worked for me, but I have a great relationship with my parents.:Pauly:

I've been much happier since I left home, I do miss my parents sometimes but I talk to them everyday...I just like not having to answer to anyone but myself, and I've definitely learned more responsibility on my own....
