getting into ketosis

rdhdfmn

New member
Ok guys....I am 35 228 6'2" large frame. I started the adkins diet at the first of the year. I have read that a diet like this needs to be more fat than protein. Is the adkins diet the same as a keto diet? I also read that eating more fat will get you into ketosis faster. Where does this extra fat come from and how much do you need? I have been very strict on the adkins diet and just barely turn the sticks. I just want to make sur that I stay in ketosis. ANd what about refeed days? I just read something about them. Do I need to refeed with carbs every week? How often? Not at all? I really have no idea. I just eat eggs meat and pork rinds. If you can help I would surly appreciate it.......RD

atkins is different from most other diets in that there is no carb up day-it's just under 20g carbs everyday-it is also not for people who lift regularly--If you lift, go with the metabolic diet because you can have 1 or 2 carb up days a week and still lose alot of fat-

I dont lift right now.....just trying to get the fat off. What about increasing the fat intake? thanks for the reply

So do I eat just fat(flax)? Is that how I get the fat? I know these are basic questions but I just dont know....Thanks for replying

I did Atkins for a long time (with success) and except for the occasionally "fat fast" (it's in the book) to speed things up, I never worried about getting more fat than protein. You should make sure that you are getting adequate protein, even if you're not lifting, which is a MINIMUM of 0.7 grams per lean body pound (if not working out). Flax is good for general health - but just take the amount suggested for your body weight. There is no reason to drink a ton of it to match your protein intake. Since you are new to the diet, don't worry about increasing fat unless you prove yourself to be highly resistant. Most men aren't, so I don't think you need to worry about it.

Um - as for the stix - do NOT be concerned if you are sitting in 'trace' - this is not a bad thing. It is not an issue of darker is better as long as you are showing 'trace'. The color you register is subject to other factors, such as activity level, time of day and hydration level. The ketones measured in urine by stix is only those that have spilled into the urine - that doesn't mean that you aren't producing them.

I never register after working out. Also they will be dilute from drinking water. Quite frankly, if you are showing TOO dark, it means you aren't drinking enough water.

'Trace' is good - means you are staying adequately hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is a key part of low-carbing successfully.

keto sticks suck! don't rely on them to know if you're in ketosis or not. If you're serious about it there's a small machine you can buy to measure the amount on ketones in your system I believe. I was on atkins and I never and I mean never turned one of those sticks colored. But I know I was in ketosis by my fat loss.

Atkins=no carb up day

It can be tough I know I'm off it now, it was too much for me but I dropped about 20-30 lbs relatively quickly on it. Be careful when you come off it, increase your carbs gradually, and as you increase your carbs increase your activity levels, walking, jogging, etc. Or you can put the weight right back on.

Good Luck
