I use this technique to control cravings and the urge to eat too much at one sitting. Hopefully some of you will find this helpful; I find it useful in all sorts of situations.
Several times a day, but usually before a meal, I will take 5 minutes to "center" myself. Now before you all run screaming away, thinking that I am some new age hippie yogi freaky dude, let me tell you I learned this from an old master sergeant when I was in the Marines. He learned it from his mama-san when he was in Vietnam. It's a very easy technique that will calm you down, focus your attention, and quiet your hungers and cravings.
1. Sit comfortably with legs crossed and back straight, or in a chair with feet on the floor and back straight.
2. Breathe in through your nose, slowly, for 5 seconds.
3. As you breathe in, force your stomach out so that the bottom of your lungs fill with air first.
4. Hold this for 5 seconds.
5. Breathe out slowly through your mouth for 5 seconds, pulling your stomach in.
6. Hold all the air out of your lungs for 5 seconds.
Breathe like this for several minutes. As you breathe, let your mind rest. Enjoy this time as a respite against the chaos and hustle of your day. You will find, if you keep this up, you can control other aspects of your life / behavior this way.
Good luck and enjoy.
