Farmed fish = wild fish

anthrax

Provided that they are raised under appropriate conditions, the nutritional content of farmed fish is at least as beneficial as that of wild fish (particularly in terms of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases), and they also have the advantages of freshness and apparent non-toxicity.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis. 2004 Feb;14(1):34-41.

ok I've recovered.

so the question is how do we provide for whether or not the fish were "raised under appropriate conditions"

?

The problem is that they are not fed "Clean" food and the FDA has tested over and over again and stated that "farmed" fish (Specifially Salmon) has far higer levels of toxins than wild fish.

but this looks like new findings feb. 14 2004

maybe there is a way to tell which people feed the fish "clean" food

like some better business bureau type fish website

thought i covered this subject before

yes farmed fish can be as beneficial as wild fish
but the best wild fish is far more tasty, juicy and beneficial as farmed
most farmed fish is salmon, catfish (yuk!) and tilapia
halibut is still in the experimental stages

please not farmed salmon is atlantic salmon and the levels of pcb's and dioxin vary according to allowable standards by country

us and canada have the lowest
scottish tend to be the highest
i don't like the habit of refeeding processed fish matter to the stock
cannabalism is what it is and we have seen that it is not a healthy thing to do
ie mad cow's, now avian flu
and i worry about this new hi omega 3 milk where they feed the cows fish meal

damn cows are vegan by nature
that is wrong

back to fish
wild salmon i find it the best, tastiest and i believe the most benefical
i choose fish that are spawned from very cold and long run rivers
best known is the copper river salmon
anyone having tried this will find it is phenom
the japanese love the fraiser river salmon and buy up most of the stock and pay up to a 1000$ a kilo for the best sushi grade salmon from this river
i personally love bristol bay salmon
these are spawned from the rivers that feed into bristol bay (between alaska and siberian peninsula)

how ever you cut it, you have to eat it to reap the rewards
so many people do not
or only do once in a while
and please dear gods do not overcook it
the omega 3 oils melt at a low temperatures so you are just cooking away your money

imho

$1000 a kilo is... $454 per pound?

Salmon that costs more than... gold?

wow...

you did cover some of that before but not all of it

you've not read all my posts
lol
yes the japanese will pay astronomical amounts for food

there is a tuna that runs in certain waters in the spring
and if a female tuna is caught during a certain time right before the roes are inseminated the tuna flesh itself is over 1000$ a kilo and the row is more in the 1500$ range

lol
i'll stick to chicken eggs, salmon eggs and quail eggs
well i have had duck eggs
would love to make an omellete from an ostrich egg
lol one would feed 2 bors

You're right obiwan9962, wild salmon (or any other fish specie) tastes way better then farm-raised one

BUT :

Sometimes you can just NOT find wild salmon
Farm-raised is then your only choice

Wild animals get rare, so expensive if not highly expensive
Then, once again, farm-raised are an option

BTW, I don't know why people feel so concerned with PCBs and dioxins in salmon

You find those shitty chemicals in milk, eggs, etc
and when you see beef's diet (food and drugs) .... :worried:

Wild salmon tastes better than farm - wild is also twice the price (by me at any rate).

I'm blessed to have a fishermen friend and live near a fishing village so I can get a lot of fresh fish as the season hits. Next to a thick marinated porterhouse steak once you go fresh fish you'll want no other protein.

:p
