This is the same news as came out of CMS/ATLAS three months ago. It's only supercoolexicitingOMGOMGOMG news to HEP doods, not to the layperson, or, arguable, the bulk of the scientific community at this time.
This is something that will take 6-12 months for verification of importance, but nothing was discovered. This is only news because of statistical significance of data. Unless you have an opinion on the standard model (i.e., the current periodic table of "things smaller than the elements"), it's meaningless to you.
HEP is just not really translatable to modern english without a shitload of a priori knowledge. We're doing some really advanced shit in physics, but unfortunetly, most of it is not accessable to 99% of people. Antimatter, shooting shit at the speed of light, doing miles of work at < 270 degrees to create temperatures around 5 trillion degrees (temp needed to achieve symmetry breaking), etc.
