Women's hair does change as they age & go thru menopause, etc.....It thins & can become a different texture when they are older. Thus, the same haircut when a woman is 25 won't look or can be treated the same as when she is 50. It is also "standard" for women to cut their hair short as they get older -- almost expected.
That said, to me, it depends on the person as to whether long hair/short hair looks good on them. Even when I was younger, long, straight hair never looked good on me, so I wear it just above my shoulders.....
