NORTH ATTLEBORO - Old ammunition found in the basement of a home on Westfield Drive late Friday afternoon was removed by the State Police bomb squad.

The unspent ammunition, about 50 rounds of different caliber , was discovered by the homeowner about 5 p.m. in the basement of the home at 87 Westfield Drive near Kelley Boulevard, Fire Capt. Scott Meyer said. It was in a covered basket.

Officials estimated the ammunition was about 25 years old.

The ammunition appeared to be for pistols and rifles, with some hunting bullets.

"We didn't look at it too carefully," Meyer said, adding the state police were quickly called.

"The best course of action was for them to come and pick it up, to be on the safe side, and put it in a safe container."

It doesn't happen that often, but the fact it was deteriorated and unstable, we felt it was best to remove it" with outside assistance.

Town police also were at the scene.
