Planet of the Clerks

Weapon X

Director goes ape over film

BY ADAM SHERWIN

THE “surprise” ending to Planet of the Apes, this summer’s blockbuster hit, has shocked one leading director who is threatening legal action for alleged plagiarism.
Like the 1968 original, the new version, which broke box office records in the US, concludes with a stunning twist that places the battle between human beings and apes in sharp relief.

But Tim Burton, the director, is now facing legal action from Kevin Smith, the award-winning director of the film Clerks, who says he came up with a similar ending three years ago.

The dispute threatens to overshadow next week’s British premiere, which will be attended by Burton and the stars Helena Bonham Carter and Mark Wahlberg.
