A lot of free govt. benefits regardless of what percentage of Indian blood you have? I thought you had to be at least 1/8? My great grandmother was half cherokee and it would be easy to prove I think. Anyone know about this?

there are many poor res indians that would like to know where to get these 'free' benefits :)

Free college. They just don't wanna go, don't want to assimilate into white man's world. Maybe free medical benefits witch would help my parents out cause even with medicare, my dad's parkinson's meds cost over 300 per month.

"Cherokee people, Cherokee tribe, so proud to live, so proud to die!!! Though I wear a shirt and tie, I'm still part red man deep inside. They took away our native life, the tomohawk and the Bowie knife. They taught their english to our young......... Maybe someday when they've learned Cherokee Nation will return" Anybody remember that song? You'd have to be pretty old.

That's right bitches. I'm cherokee. Don't fuck with me or I'll take off your head with my tomahawk.

In Canada it is not that simple http://www.afn.ca/article.asp?id=1714#werb my guess is the US would be pretty much the same for red tape.

He said it's a bitch. There's lot of benefits you may be entitled to, but they're not gonna tell you how to get them and there's a lot to know. He said in a lot of black churches, they will tell people how to get govt. benefits that they are entitled to.

most ndn's i know, had to pay college their own way.

Also depends if u live on a rez or not. Only free benefits are given to tribal govts to provide schooling, healthcare and substinence to their low-income citizens (simliar to what we do for our mexicans) who live on the rez.

If u life off the rez - there's practically nothing. There are some programs - but good luck finding them.

oh and 95% of rez ndn's make no money from casinos either.

Biteme, you have to prove it through the records at the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). It isn't as easy as you may think, at least it isn't for the Cherokees and some other tribes because when many of them died on the Trail of Tears, they just buried them in mass graves or in shallow graves along the way with no documentation. So, it gets a little tough to trace.
