In short, it appears Donald Rumsfeld was one of the main people who pushed for the hasty approval of aspartame to nurse his political agenda before any long term testing could be done. It has been banned in Europe for use in children's products, and New Mexico may become the first state to ban it. Why hasn't it been banned yet domestically? Simple: Politics (ie, power players care more about $$ than the health of a country's collective population who generate it).
There's a bunch of stuff out there, more bad than good.
On the other end of the scale, if you're worried about sugar consumption and diabetes, then one solution would be to at least cut back on eating all the garbage food out there that contains it. So many people are always looking for the quick and easy fix or the latest fad.
It often seems there's no room in the world for discipline anymore.
