Here's my take pn the whole Ryan Moats incident

1. Details do matter. You can make the case any story is more or less of a story because of certain details. Example, dude is found dead at the bottom of a cliff...so what. He probably fell. Suppose dude is found dead at the bottom of a cliff and his wife was seen smiling walking back to the car. Kinda changes things, doesn't it? The devil is in the details.

2. When the cop tells Ryan again to go get his insurance Ryan walks around to the far side of a darkened vehicle. Not only does the officer not follow to keep him in sight, he actually turns his back to talk on the radio. Those are not the actions of a cop who is worried something is gonna go down. We can talk all day about how dangerous a cop's job is but this is a cop who is 100% in control of the situation. Why not give the guy the benefit of the doubt?

3. The CNN video is titled "Cop halts visit to dying in-law", not "cop detains black dude while his mother dies". I don't need this to be a racial thing to make it newsworthy. I post my thread even if the guy pulls over Jason Witten.

That is my excellent, well thought out response...which I hope YOU read.

I read it and I, as always, respect your opinion.

BTW for #3 I never brought race into this and I always hate it when people do. (I assume that wasn't directed at me anyway). I don't care if it was the Swedish Bikini team going in to see their dying vibrator. Race is irrelevant.

I brought race into this because I read an article on ESPN this morning that decided to call out the fact that the dude was black and the cop was white. You know as well as I do that race affects matters such as these.

doesn't give him the right to jeopardize other drivers. also the dude knew he was gonna have to deal with the cop anyway; may as well have just stopped right away instead of dragging it on and getting the cop's adrenaline up

great point, no one was dying in the car.

THAT would definitely be newsworthy.

!!FUCK THE POLICE

thin blue line
would you rather have it be warlord style like in somalia?
or how about like in mexico, were cops/judges/lawyers get killed.
i'll take the imperfections of our police forces as opposed to the real deal fuct up police forces of the world

I feel like we, as human beings, tend to get caught up in the emotions rather than logic (shocking!). And that's what I see in this case. First off all, it makes a great media story because the mother in law actually died during the incident. If she didn't die, if the media didn't have the whole "while the police officer detained Moats his mother in law WAS DYING" angle, the story would be less attractive and would not have received as much play as it has. That's point #1.

Point #2 is that the dude, regardless of why, ran a red light and the continued to run from the police after they attempted to pull him over. Game over. That's all you need right there. Once again, the why does not matter at this point in the story.

Apparently the cop drew his gun (but didn't point it at them) when Moats and his wife got out of the car outside the hospital, which seems a bit excessive to me, but I suppose that's policy and I understand that. These guys need to protect themselves, especially from people that run from the cops. And the police issued a statement that the cop should have shown more "common sense" when Moats kept telling him the reson for his running the red light. I guess I agree with that - at some point, the cop could have gone inside the hospital with the Moats and confirmed all this. But then again, I'm sure cops get lied to CONSTANTLY. And I would hope that if Moats pulled over in the first place and explained the story, the cop would have been more sensitive to it.

Anyway, that's my take. Shitty situation, but it's a homerun type story for the media and most people see "cop detains black dude while his mother dies" and boom, judgment has been passed and cemented.

I think if you would have been in the same situation, you would have done everything the same as Moats and been equally as outraged when the cop acted like a dick - IMHO.

I KNOW IT! Those are the most dangerous kind of people out there. THE ONES THAT ARE RUNNING AWAY! Especially when they are running into a hospital. There's all kinds of scapels in there. #1 threat to public safety.
