Growing your own bud

How difficult is it to grow your own? Let's say I have this friend that likes to light up from time to time. He lives in an apartment with a private south facing patio. Would it be possible to plant a few seeds and grow a little plant inconspicously on the patio? How tall do your plants have to be to provide good fruit?
