So I am applying to be a bouncer at a few local clubs, and I am wondering if any of you are bouncers and have any tips on what it takes to be one and how to handle yourself. I am a decent size guys but there are definitely people bigger than me, I have some martial art/wrestling experience but I know there are a lot of people who are more experienced. Also, even if I was bigger or more experienced, there is always a chance that someone even bigger or even more experienced will walk into your bar/club. How do you all deal with that, and deal with people in general. The clubs that I am applying to aren't dangerous or even shady but drunk people do stupid shit, and the last thing I want is someone to get hurt because I do the wrong thing. So if any of guys have any thought on this, please pm or respond.

Most appreciated,
Snooker

just remember alcohol impairs your motor skills, hence slower reaction time, thnought process slower, usually some sort of verbal distraction works wonders

well bro I am a bouncer and basically all you need to do is basically make sure everyone has your back, and in bouncing not everyone has your back, so you have to look out for yourself, some guys will act like they have your back but they really dont...........so since you juice you need to remember to keep your cool, and second if anyone tests you get right in their face and choke them out or let them know you will kick their ass if they fuck up, bouncing is cool and all but really it all depends on the management and how the security is ran, my buddy who use to work with me was a bouncer/assistant manager at TWILO in new york, it had 5,000 people each night, so bro just be cool and remember dont let people pull your strings or try to front you, basically just do the job, you will be able to see what you will have to do once you start, if shit jumps off dont go in by yourself, and since their are bigger and more experienced bouncers play off their lead........good luck

keep in mind... as hamster noted, alcohol impairs motor skills. aside from that... if you're as big as you say you are, it's going to take a SHITLOAD of liquor to get someone that size drunk.

keep your cool, use your head.

another thing is that bouncers get sued in civil actions all the time, and get criminal actions, so you really really have to watch yourself, for the legal backlash you can experience i dont think the $10 and hour is worth it

dont try and be nice. if someone is doing something you dont like, be authoritative. I am relitively new at this, but i have found being polite doesnt work. If someone gets physical or in your face, take them down. remember, no blatant punches and shit like that. If some monster gets inyour face, throw a knee into there crotch and slam them. If the cops get involved, its your word against his. No one saw you throw a punch so its all good. They are going to take your word over the drunk bastard you just levelled.

By being a bouncer it is many times a no win situation.People get attitudes over everything. They get mad if you check their ID & others are offended if you dont check. At first I would try to reason or be nice to people but I've found out that if you do that they try to
challenge you either verbally or physically. When someone has to leave just make them leave dont try to talk or reason with someone who has been drinking.Lots of guys that are in the bar like to size you up just because you are a bouncer.Alot of them would love to brag & be known for kicking a bouncers ass.So be careful. It can be alot of fun at times & at others it can really suck. The good things are you get to meet alot
of girls & alot of people who work in other bars so when you go out you are recognized & you get hooked up everywhere you go.

If you take on any job where you have the chance to confront an unregulated violent scenario, then I suggest you read "Perform with Confidence" by Robert Redenbach.

It might just save your ass.

hardgainer (saved my ass more times than I could care to count)

i have been working security in clubs on and off for a few years...

the best advice i can give you is this....use your head and your communication skills. The intoxicted patrons of the club (the ones you will be having problems with) will never use either their heads (unless it is the form of a head butt) or any communication skills. Most problems can be difused without resulting to violence.

Now that being said, you are not being paid enough to take an ass-kicking every weekend. If a situation comes to the point of physical confrontation, priority #1 is don't try to take him down in a group of his friends. This will always result in you getting kicked in the side of the head while wrestling on the floor. Instead, learn a few basic writst locks and arm bars and utilize them to "escort" the problem out of the club. Once he/she is outside and surronded by security/police, he will generally change his story. You always have to be able to trust the guys you work with to be there for you when the shit hits the fan. If you feel you can't trust them, I would not recommend working there.

Just my .02

BTW, I am working the door at a new club opening Friday night. It ought to be a FUQN' ZOO! I am looking forward to it.
