Flax Seeds vs Flax Oil

Hey all, long time reader, first time poster.

I have a question about flax seeds. I have some oil,
which I use on salad dressings now and then. However,
flax is in a cereal I have grown to really like, Uncle Sam, which is
just whole wheat flakes + flax seeds, no sugar or additives. It
is yummy, but my question is, is eating maybe a tablespoon's
worth of whole flax seeds the equivalent of a dose of flax oil?

Good question. I'm not a big fan of nuts anyway, but I"m curious if it might be better.

I checked out the stats on fitday.com. The site would only give me nutrition info for a CUP of seeds (couldn't select 'tablespoon').

Here's the stats for 1 Cup Flax Seeds:
Cal: 722
Fat: 49
SFat: 4.6
Carb: 54
Fiber: 25
Pro: 26

To get a similar amount of calories for Flaxseed OIL - I entered .4 Cup & got:
Cal: 771
Fat: 87
SFat: 8.2
Carb: 0
Fiber:0
Pro:0

So it looks like the oil eliminates the other nutriets & thus gets you more fat for the amount of calories. So I suppose they are both a good source of fats.

I wonder though if you'll get the same benefits from the seeds themselves. I've heard: healthier skin, hair, & nails & reduced cravings. I would guess YES since you still get the fat.

flax seed oil = 100% fat

flax seeds = EFAs + carbs + fiber
and you have to grind them

Yup, Anthrax nailed it on the head. If you eat WHOLE flaxseeds, you get very little of the fat from them. If you don't believe me just try eating a 1/4 cup of whole flaxseeds and check your stools the next day! Stick to the oil, unless you just want some increased 'bulk' in your stools.
