What makes the muscles look hard and pump

Muscle fullness and hardness has nothing to do with gear. Muscle fullness is a result of the muscles being loaded with muscle glycogen and intracellular water. When glycogen is low so is muscle cell water and thus muscle volume is significantly decreased. Hardness is a matter of training and low subcutaneous water/fat. If you get rid of the water and fat underneath the skin you will have taken the first step to "hardening" the muscles. The second is actually having dense msucle fibers which is a product of weight training. Some drugs are purported to increases hardness simply because they result in no water retention beneath the skin. AS increase the storage of muscle glycogen and increase muscle size. This leads to fullness as well as hardness so long as sub-Q fluid and fat is not present.
