Low Sex Drive Ups Men's Cancer Risk

November 14, 2000

Some women jokingly dismiss macho men as suffering from "testosterone poisoning," but it turns out that a healthy testosterone level keeps men healthy, too.
Testosterone fuels the sex drive in both men and women, although men typically have much higher levels of the hormone. But men who have a low sex drive appear to be at increased risk for male breast cancer, the Electronic Telegraph reports.

An additional story from the Telegraph describes the personal experiences of a member of Britain's House of Lords, who did the right thing by consulting his doctor promptly after discovering a lump in his left breast. Because his sister had died of breast cancer, it's possible he had inherited a genetic susceptibility to the disease, which increases the risk of male breast cancer four- or five-fold.

Breast cancer occurs much less frequently in men than in women, but the cancer can be deadlier in men if not detected early. Because men have so little breast tissue, tumors can quickly spread, which significantly reduces the chances of a cure.

Warning signs include any breast lump or nipple discharge. Given that family physicians may never see a single case of male breast cancer in their careers, men with suspicious symptoms sometimes need to press their doctor to schedule diagnostic tests.

Men should be especially vigilant if breast cancer appears to run in the women of their family. The breast-cancer genes that increase the risk of disease in women can also boost the risk in men. The Male Breast Cancer Information Center offers links to clinical information on the disease in men.
