MacLean suspended: The NBA suspended injured Miami Heat forward Don MacLean for five games without pay Wednesday because of steroid use.

The Heat and NBA are not permitted to comment on MacLean's case, in accordance with the league's steroids policy. But MacLean's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said MacLean was unaware the supplement he was taking to treat knee tendinitis contained a steroid banned by the league.

``He had really bad tendinitis in his knees early in his career,'' Bartelstein said. ``It was suggested to take a supplement rather than an anti-inflammatory. It worked great for his knees. He didn't do a good enough job of reading the league policy. Part of what is in the supplement is a steroid. Once he learned about it, he stopped taking it.''

Bartelstein, who could not identify the supplement, said his client has not used steroids to bulk up.

``Look at him,'' Bartelstein said. ``He's not exactly busting out at the seams.''

MacLean is sidelined at least another month, anyway, after surgery on a toe. Because he is on the active roster, the belief is that he can begin serving the suspension immediately. The Heat could not confirm that.

The suspension will cost MacLean more than $44,000.
