lose muscle while cutting

It is very simple..... Your body needs energy. It can get it from the food, the fat or the muscle. Your diet is key, not necessarily the amount of calories. I used to just count calories and soon learned that it is the quality of food that makes up the calories that will detemine how much fat that you will burn.
The amount of calories that you are consuming, even if good, is not enough to maintain and muscle will be lost.
 
Just realized that the 900 cal was protein only (supposedly). You need three macronutrients fats, protein and carbs . The percentages change based on what you are looking for. Bodybuilders cut out the carbs prior to an event inorder to get down to the low single digits.
